We like to drink, drink, drink!

September 28 is Drink Beer Day.

Lucy’s operetta: “We like to drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink!”

According to DaysOfTheYear.com, “This exciting holiday is recognised in many different countries across the globe and taking part could not be easier. Simply gather a few friends, nip down to your nearest off-licence or supermarket and crack open a beer for a fun-packed day. Alternatively, celebrate by attending beer festivals or beer-tasting events held in your local area.”

Good ideas, yes, but I have another: How about drinking along with Lucy? In the I Love Lucy episode titled “The Operetta,” Lucy writes an operetta to be staged as a fundraiser for her the women’s club. It’s got a memorable drinking song, “We Are the Troops of the King (We Like to Drink).”

“We Are the Troops of the King (We Like to Drink)” from “The Operetta,” I Love Lucy (1952)

Oh, we are the troops of the king, yes we are!
And we only think of one thing, yes we do!
We like to drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink!
We like to drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink!
We like to drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink!
We like to drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink!

Have a great Drink Beer Day, and remember to stay safe—don’t drink, watch I Love Lucy, and drive.
