June 25 is National Catfish Day.
When I considered what to post for this day, I wondered to myself, “Which classic TV show is most likely to have featured a catfish?” And then I thought of Andy and Opie with their fishing poles, and the answer was obvious. The Andy Griffith Show!
A Google search turned up pages from The Andy Griffith Show Book by Ken Beck, and it has a whole section on Mayberry food. Apparently (and I never knew this), catfish casserole was the Friday special at the Bluebird Diner in Mayberry. Excuse me while I go retch.
Okay, I’m back. And now, even though I already posted it for Go Fishing Day, here is Andy Griffith singing the show’s theme song, “The Fishin’ Hole.” It would just seem wrong not to include it.
