Today on the tray: Chock full o’nuts…and dates

National Date Nut Bread Day is celebrated twice a year — today (December 22) and also September 8.

From what I’ve read, Chock Full o’Nuts offers a date nut bread sandwich in its coffee shops that has quite a cult following. In fact, the company even sponsored the Chock Full o’Nuts World Date Nut Bread Eating Championship in 2006. If you have the stomach for it, watch the contest video below, but I warn you, it ain’t pretty.

In New York, contenders for the Chock Full o’Nuts Date Nut Bread Eating Championship chow down on date nut bread and cream cheese sandwiches to the music of Weird Al Yankovic’s “Eat It” (Dec. 20, 2006)

John D. Rockefeller
Even John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s money couldn’t buy a better coffee than Chock Full o’Nuts, but he had enough money to keep them from using his family’s name.

To me, the Chock Full o’Nuts brand will always be associated with “…that heavenly coffee. Better coffee a millionaire’s money can’t buy!” Which millionaire, you might ask? Well, the original lyrics were “Better coffee Rockefeller’s money can’t buy,” but the Rockefeller family objected and used its mighty influence to get the lyrics changed.

Page Morton Black, who sang the famous jingle, was married to Chock Full o’Nuts founder William Black. Hear her sing the jingle in the vintage commercial below, in which she appears with her pal Pinocchio.

Chock Full o’Nuts is that heavenly coffee
Better coffee a millionaire’s money can’t buy!
