November 15 is National Bundt Day. 

The distinctive Bundt baking pan was created by Nordic Ware 63 years ago. According to the company’s website, “In 1950, the landmark pan was introduced, after the Minneapolis Chapter of the Hadassah Society asked Dave and Dotty [Dalquist, Nordic Ware’s founders] to produce a kuglehof [European fruit cake] pan, similar to the one the society’s president had received from her grandmother in Germany.”

Remember the scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding where Ian’s WASPy parents, the Millers, bring a Bundt cake when they come to meet the Greek Portokalos family? And Mrs. Portokalos is completely puzzled by it. “What is it?” she asks. Mrs. Miller repeats “Bundt” numerous times, but the word is meaningless to Mrs. Portokalos. Nevertheless, she thanks Mrs. Miller profusely and then carries it away, saying, “There’s a hole in this cake.” Later, when she serves it, she fills the hole with a centerpiece.
