In memory of Jean Stapleton

Jean Stapleton, who, of course, played Edith Bunker on All in the Family, died yesterday, May 31, 2013, at age 90. In addition to her TV roles, Stapleton acted on stage and in feature films.

It was hard to decide which All in the Family clip to post as a tribute, but I ultimately settled on “cling peaches.” (After all, this is a TV and food site.)

In the clip, Edith returns home after having gotten into an accident in the supermarket parking lot. Trying to explain to Archie what happened, she tells a roundabout story about cling peaches in heavy syrup, which were on sale at Ferguson’s Market. Archie, fed up that she won’t get to the point, forbids her to utter the phrase “cling peaches,” so she continues with her story, substituting “hmmm hmmm-hmmm.”
