Today on the tray: Hazelnut cake

June 1 is National Hazelnut Cake Day. “Hazelnut adds a welcome nutty flavor to cake, upping the level of sophistication with a uniquely complex flavor,” says Slashfood.

I can’t hear “hazelnut” without thinking of that nut, Hazel, who worked as a housekeeper for Mr. B. on Hazel. The point of every episode of the series, which ran from 1961 to 1966, seemed to be “Let’s keep the servant in her place.” But she was such an obnoxious know-it-all that you couldn’t blame Mr. B. for trying to make her understand who was boss. Actress Shirley Booth won two Emmys for playing this annoying character.

In the final season, Mr. B. and his wife move to the Middle East, so Hazel and little Harold move in with Mr. B.’s brother. That’s right, the Baxters leave their child behind—that’s how desperate they are to put distance between themselves and Hazel.

Below, Mr. B. is just trying to read the goddamn paper in peace, but Hazel won’t leave him alone.
