Today on the tray: Candy Corn

October 30 is National Candy Corn Day.

Who invented candy corn anyway? According to CNN, “George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy Company created candy corn in the 1880s. It was made to mimic a kernel of corn and became instantly popular because of its innovative design. It was one of the first candies to feature three different colors!”

Candy corn looms large as a symbol of Halloween. In one of Roseanne’s Halloween episodes, Roseanne is visited by the Ghosts of Halloween Past, Present, and Future—and the Ghost of Halloween Present looks like a giant human candy corn. See it at 13:44 in the video below.

Ghost: I am the Ghost of Halloween Present!

Roseanne: No you’re not. You’re some great big piece of candy corn.

Ghost: Jeez, I get this all the time. Look, I’m a symbol of Halloween. Halloween, candy corn, end of story. Let’s go.

Roseanne: Okay, but I hope no one sees us together, ’cause I’m supposed to be on Slim-Fast.
