Today in food history: The Tootsie Roll is born

On Feb. 23, 1896, Leo Hirschfeld invented the Tootsie Roll. According to Wikipedia, he named the candy after his daughter, Clara “Tootsie” Hirschfeld. I guess it sounded better than Clara Roll.
