Julie Andrews, gaze into your future

Young Julie AndrewsBefore being cast as Maria in the film adaptation of The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews appeared with Carol Burnett in this spoof of the Broadway musical, unaware that the movie role was in her future. It was part of the TV special Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall.

Though the Van Trapps were from Austria, you’ll notice that the “Pratt Family Singers” are Swiss. Maybe they were afraid Rodgers and Hammerstein would sue if there were too many similarities.

I don’t remember any long lines of lederhosen-clad chorus boys in the movie, but I think it would have been a nice addition.
